TS04: Eastern Movement for Queer and Marginalized Inclusivity: Yoga Therapy and Qigong

Speaker bios: Gina M. Barrett, MIA, E-RYT 200, C-IAYT

In this session, Gina will uncover the antiqueer biases in yoga and taoist philosophy and how these practices can be more queer-inclusive. She will also highlight how to make yoga and qigong more inclusive and accessible to marginalized communities in general.

Delve into current research on the biology of queer identity and dysphoria (transgender identity) and the documented mental health and survival issues faced by marginalized people. Attendees will identify their own privilege and learn how to create inclusive and accessible spaces for those who are queer and/or marginalized. Participants will also practice using inclusive language in marketing and instruction while exploring the need for increased awareness and sensitivity around touch, clothing, and the daily survival needs of people in these groups.

Learn to adjust your concepts of gender to create brave space for nonbinary/asexual/unidentified/transgender individuals, explore alternatives to masculine and feminine/men’s and women’s sharing circles, and practice yoga and qigong sequences, as well as ceremonies that promote courage, safety, and unity.

Please bring a yoga mat if possible.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify research-supported language and practices that are inclusive of and safer for queer and marginalized clients and groups.
  2. Discover how qigong can be a helpful complement to yoga therapy practice.
