TS03: Unlocking Transformation: Exploring the Profound Impact of Yoga on Incarcerated Men
Speaker bio: Chanda Williams, PhD, E-RYT 500, C-IAYT
Delve into the fascinating findings from Dr. Chanda Williams’ dissertation study on the effects of yoga on incarcerated men. Through a qualitative research design, Williams conducted in-depth interviews and observations to capture the experiences and perspectives of formerly incarcerated men who practiced yoga during their incarceration.
This presentation will provide an overview of the study’s background and rationale, highlighting the mental health needs of incarcerated individuals and the potential of yoga as a holistic therapeutic modality. We will explore the neurobiological underpinnings of trauma and how yoga practices can positively influence brain function and emotional regulation. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the mental health benefits of yoga, as reported by the participants. The implications of these findings for yoga therapy in correctional facilities, as well as for other vulnerable populations, will be a central focus of the presentation. The presentation will conclude with a powerful reflection on the transformational power of yoga and its potential to unlock positive change for incarcerated men. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice a variety of brief, accessible asanas, pranayama, and other embodiment techniques.
