RT5: How Do We Include Philosophy, Spirituality, and Lifestyle in Yoga Research Trials?

Leader bios: Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, PhD, Ursula Kelly, PhD, and Kimberly Richardson, MS, E-RYT 500, C-IAYT

Description: Virtually all published biomedical research trials evaluating yoga as a therapeutic intervention for medical and psychological conditions use standardized protocols that apply identical practices for everyone. These interventions are also usually limited to postures/exercises, relaxation, breath regulation, and meditation/mindfulness, and they take place in large group-practice settings. In contrast, yoga therapists provide interventions one-to-one or in small groups; tailor them specifically to client characteristics, needs, and limitations; and often incorporate core yoga components such as philosophy, spirituality, and lifestyle recommendations. During this roundtable discussion we’ll delve into the reasons for these differences, the consequences of the limited yoga interventions used in research, and considerations for future clinical research on yoga therapy.
