RSS3: Yoga for the Treatment of Chronic Pain: Results from a Clinical Trial and Possible Mechanisms of Action
Presenter bio: Peter Bayley, PhD
Clinical trials have established that yoga is an effective and safe treatment for chronic pain. This session describes a recent randomized clinical trial conducted by Dr. Bayley’s research group to evaluate the efficacy of yoga as a treatment for chronic pain in veterans with Gulf War illness. We will consider primary and secondary outcomes from the trial, including a brain-imaging substudy that shed light on a possible mechanism of action of treatment. The session will also highlight some general design considerations when planning clinical trials involving yoga treatment, such as the choice of an appropriate control group, and the interpretation of results.
Learning Objectives
- Identify two key principles of experimental design when planning a clinical trial for a health-related disorder.
- Describe how yoga may relieve chronic pain via the descending pain modulatory system.
