RSS2: Evaluating Pelvic Floor Yoga in Older Women with Urinary Incontinence: The LILA Trial

Presenter bio: Alison Huang, MD, MPhil, MAS

In this session, Dr. Alison Huang will discuss the goals, methods, key findings, and lessons learned from the U.S. National Institutes of Health–funded Lessening Incontinence with Low-impact Activity (LILA) trial, a multisite randomized trial evaluating the multisystem effects of a group-based pelvic floor yoga program for midlife and older women with urinary incontinence. The session addresses key issues related to the design and conduct of the research, operational challenges the study encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic, and potential implications of the findings for the unique effects of yoga interventions on the health and well-being of women with incontinence across the aging spectrum. Dr. Huang will also discuss expectations for designing and carrying out rigorous studies to evaluate the effectiveness, accessibility, and safety of yoga interventions for therapeutic indications in older populations.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe key considerations for designing studies to provide rigorous insights into the specific effects of yoga interventions.
  2. Discuss appropriate interpretation of findings from the Lessening Incontinence with Low-impact Activity trial related to the effectiveness and safety of pelvic floor yoga for older women with urinary incontinence.
