Local Practice or Global Praxis? DEIAB Strategies for the Yoga Therapy Field

Speaker bio: Suzie Carmack, PhD, MFA, MEd, E-RYT 500, NBC-HWC, PCC, C-IAYT

The allied health profession of yoga therapy is dedicated to customizing yoga for one person at a time, and to adapting the practices of yoga for all people. Yet the 2022 Yoga in the World study found that many nonpractitioners believed yoga is not for them—even when they’ve tried it once! In this session, we will first explore strategies for enacting the practices of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and belonging (DEIAB) in our yoga therapy private practice and training settings. Then, we will explore strategies for adopting DEIAB in our emerging field as global praxis—working from, as scholar Dr. Ortrun Zuber-Skerritt says, “the interdependence and integration—not separation—of theory and practice, research and development, thought and action.”
