Ending the War Age

Conflict has been prominent in human history for as long as we have been human. And yet the yoga community, hundreds of million strong, can lead an effort to stop war—before it stops us all.

The enemy is not this combatant or that; it is war itself, and our strong human tendency to join into violent conflict. Yoga philosophy offers invaluable guideposts to uncovering the truth and engaging in right action, and we yoga professionals can leverage our example and our networks to bring this approach to the world stage. Ahimsa, the principle of nonharming, does not say it all, nor is passive resistance always the answer. We must be nonviolent, but at least as strategic and tactical as those who would perpetuate the violence. Like Gandhi engaging in civil disobedience, to succeed we must be thoughtful and have empathy for those we confront by peaceful means—because they are the very ones we must win over. Now is the time for yogis to stand up and help to bring this long and lamentable chapter of humankind’s history to a close.
