TS04: ADVANCED PRACTICE The Alignment Revolution: Applying Biotensegrity and Fascia Research to Yoga Therapy

Presenter bio: Michelle Nayeli Bouvier, C-IAYT

Yoga therapists face a critical challenge: the alignment models most of us learned are based on outdated mechanical biomechanics that work against the natural design of human neuromyofascial architecture. Recent advances in fascia research and biotensegrity principles reveal that what we’ve been teaching as “correct alignment” may actually contribute to injuries and dysregulation we’re trying to prevent.

This session bridges cutting-edge research with clinical application and traditional wisdom to transform how we assess, cue, and guide embodiment as a therapeutic intervention. Drawing from research in neuromyofascia and biotensegrity, as well as excerpts from tantric source texts, participants will learn evidence-informed approaches that honor the body’s design and align with core yoga principles of ahimsa (nonharming), satya (truth), and yoga (yoking, integration) itself. We’ll have opportunities to feel the power of this paradigm shift firsthand using interoception to notice differences in force and effort distribution, joint comfort, nervous system state, breath patterning, and overall integration.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify three key differences between mechanical, outer alignment cues and somatic, biotensegrity-informed movement cues.
  2. Apply current fascia and biotensegrity research to design therapeutic movement interventions that support joint centration and neuromyofascial integration.
  3. Distinguish between alignment approaches that integrate and disintegrate clients’ body-mind systems by assessing force distribution patterns through interoceptive feedback.
